What the Career Framework is

The Career Framework is a guide and reference on how to be successful in your WHOOP career. It details role definitions, level expectations, and identifies levers you can use to grow your career.

Managers will use this framework and its toolkits to guide individuals’ growth, maintain accountability, and pave a path for success.

The framework entails the following components:

  • Roles and levels - detailed expectations of levels for each role.
  • Promotion Principles - Guidelines for growth between levels.
  • Toolkits - resources to leverage along your journey - internal only.

What the Career Framework is not

The Career Framework is not an exhaustive list of behaviors but rather a guide to help you shape goals with your manager in categories valued by WHOOP.

The Career Framework should not be treated as a checklist for promotion. It should be leveraged to discover what impact could look like in your role or the next.

Getting Started

WHOOP gauges the success of engineers by impact. Your work should be focused on creating impact within the scope at or above your role’s level. Start by looking at the sections detailing “What is Impact”. This will give you a good starting point for understanding the evaluation of each success within a role.

Next, evaluate each defined level within your role under the Roles and Levels section.

After you familiarize yourself with the Roles and Levels, feel free to leverage any of the toolkits provided. The toolkits are meant to help facilitate learning at all levels between yourself and your manager. They consist of thought frameworks, exercises, and tracking tools that can help you and your manager set clear goals and organize your accomplishments here at WHOOP.

What is Impact?

Success is measured by the impact an engineer has on our customers and the business. Your focus should be geared towards the long-term impact on the members or end users first; if the customers win, we win.

While impact can be considered from many different angles, here are a few that should help shape your journey at WHOOP.

  • Consistency - Delivering impact is not a one-time event. WHOOP considers impact over time and your ability to deliver impact continuously at each level.
  • Breadth - Impact can be narrow or broad; as you level up at WHOOP, your impact should grow in breadth and reach across the company.
  • Term - Impact comes in various complexities. As you level up in your career you should seek initiatives of growing complexity and term. You should go from delivering short-term impact in your early stages to driving long-term impact through others.
  • Teamwork - Impact rarely is accomplished in isolation. You are always considerate of your team and peers, making sure you are a team player first.
