Roles & Levels
Welcome to the roles and levels guide. Here, you will find a description of each role and its corresponding levels.
Each level defines the minimum expectations of performance at that level. Each level should be considered a band, such that the level starts as defined, spans up to the next level and builds on top of previous levels.
Level Structure
Each level contains areas of expectation and behaviors in the following categories. While each category focuses on distinction from the last level, it is expected that you still embody and encompass the categories of prior levels.
- Scope - the area in which that level is expected to drive impact and take ownership. See “What is scope” for more info.
- Craft - the ability to deliver and maintain the continued expected impact through execution at that level.
- Communication & Collaboration - the ability to communicate externally and collaborate well with peers a.k.a teamwork.
- Coaching - the ability to up-level other individuals in pursuit of growing the whole team.
- Strategy & Execution - the ability to set in motion and deliver long-term goals or initiatives.
- Moving to the next level - Areas where you can focus your efforts after accomplishing continuous impact at the current level. This section is meant to help guide you toward the next level and provide rough guidelines on the expected time to demonstrate the next level.
What is Scope?
Each level details a section called “Scope”. Scope is the area on which you can have an impact at WHOOP and encompasses the reach of influence you can have in the company. It is visualized within our organizational structure, highlighting (in blue) your immediate area of impact and the nearest organizational units (in dotted white) around you.
As the levels grow, scope increases. For instance, a software engineer 1 may focus on impacting projects within their team domain, whereas a senior may seek to have an impact across a group of teams within a domain.
The defined scope is not a limiting factor for your growth, rather it is a minimum expectation for a level. In other words, do not hesitate to have an impact beyond the defined scope of your level.
